Barista Training

ONLY SELECT BARISTA TRAINING COURSES ARE AVAILABLE AT OUR BROADMEADOW, NEWCASTLE STORE

Barista training at the Garage has always been our priority. We believe that you hold our reputation in your hands. The training is not only about getting you more business or getting you that job, but it is also an exercise in self-preservation for us. We have been training barista in Newcastle for over 12 years and, in 2012, we decided to have our Level One course fully accredited to provide our clients with certified, high-quality barista training.

PLEASE NOTE: Our coffee courses are only run at our Newcastle store, we do not currently offer barista training or coffee courses at our Brisbane location.

Looking to do an Accredited course? You now need to have a USI. Find out more about the USI and how to get one here

What makes us better?

Unlike a lot of barista courses, we provide you with a small classroom size of only 5 students and each student has their own group head and steam wand. The small class size and exclusive use of equipment mean that each student obtains individual attention and instruction from our certified trainer, so there is plenty of opportunities to make beverages many times over. We don't rush you through either - all students will have ample time to learn and understand everything. As we are also a local roaster, you will get to see how the roasting of coffee is carried out, giving students a greater overall understanding of coffee.

Coffee Training For Home

Do you want to do the course but you don’t need the certificate? Why not do our Espresso Essentials Course. It is run to the same standard as the Accredited training, the main difference is that you just don’t go through the certification process.

The Difference Between Accredited and Non-Accredited Training

Accredited Training is training which provides a person with a nationally recognised qualification on completion. It is sometimes referred to as Nationally Recognised Training and has been developed based on the National Training Package for the given industry or where a Training Package does not exist and a course has been accredited for national recognition.

What is the difference between an accredited (nationally recognised) course and a non-accredited course?

By undertaking a nationally recognised course, participants learn in accordance with nationally agreed industry standards. On successful completion of the course, participants receive a qualification (or statement of attainment if doing part of the course).

The qualification is recognised in every state of Australia (and New Zealand).

Participants are required to complete an assessment for all nationally recognised courses.

Non-accredited courses do not carry national recognition, however, they carry several advantages if gaining a qualification is not a key reason for the training. The course can be built around a client’s specific training needs and there is no assessment requirement.

Which class should I attend?

Are you looking to work in a café? Our 7hr fully accredited class is the one you want! This class will give you two nationally recognised certificates:

  • SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety
  • SITHFAB005 Prepare and serve espresso coffee

At the completion of this class, you will know how to make the 10 main beverages from the espresso menu and how to correctly use and clean down the equipment.

Are you wanting to make great coffee at home? Our 3hr Espresso Essentials class is the one you want! This class will show you how to drop the perfect shot every time, get your milk silky smooth and how to best clean and maintain your equipment.

Have you already completed the safe food handling training?

Use hygienic practices for food safety (SITXFSA001) is a pre-requisite for the Prepare and serve espresso coffee unit. If you have successfully completed this unit through other training at school or TAFE and can provide a copy of the original certificate or transcript, please contact our trainer Jenine to discuss other training options to complete just the coffee unit with us.

Do I have to have a certificate to work in a cafe?

It is not a legal requirement to have a certificate to work as a barista, but completing an Accredited Class gives you essential training and skills to make you job ready.

Are your trainers qualified?

All three of our trainers are Certified Workplace Trainers and Assessors and are experienced baristas who have worked over 50 years collectively in various hospitality positions.

They will guide you through our classes in a relaxed and informative manner and share all the tips and skills required for great coffee making at home and in the workplace.

Do you have an advanced class?

Our Barista Advanced class is a direct continuation of Barista Foundations that will help you hone your new skills and knowledge for the real-world workplace.

In this class, you will learn how to prepare and serve multiple orders to industry standards, using various techniques to improve both speed and accuracy of pouring the correct coffee for the customer’s order. (Barista Foundations is a pre-requisite)

Is it a hands-on course?

Yes, all courses are extremely hands-on, and we use commercial machines and grinders in all of our classes.

I’ve been working as a barista for years but I don’t have the piece of paper?

If you have the practical experience of working in a café preparing food and beverages but don’t have the Certificate, we are able to offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). This is an assessment process that uses evidence of your previous non-certificated achievements to demonstrate competence or achievement within a unit or qualification. Contact our trainer to arrange this assessment.

How many people will be in the class?

We keep our classes small with a maximum of 5 students.

Will I have my own machine?

Yes, each student has their own group head, steam arm, and grinder to use throughout the course.

What happens if I don’t pass?

Most students pass the first time, but if you are unsuccessful, don’t worry, you can redo your assessment at no extra charge.

What do I need to bring?

Everything you need for the course is supplied, just bring yourself and your enthusiasm!

Do I need to wear special clothing?

No, but we suggest wearing closed-in shoes. Things can get hot and messy.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes, upon successful completion of an accredited course, you will be issued a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment certificate within 14 days of completion.

What if I’m not available on your listed dates?

Contact our team to discuss other times that may be suitable.
